Peru is known for having a large number of important archaeological sites, mainly from the Inca and pre-Inca culture. Machu Picchu, the Inca citadel located high in the Andes, is one of the most famous and visited archaeological sites in the world. Other important Inca sites include Sacsayhuam&&a&&n and Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, and the city of Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire. In addition to the Inca sites, Peru is also home to numerous archaeological sites of pre-Inca cultures such as Caral, the oldest city in America; Chan Chan, the largest mud city in the world; and Nazca, known for its mysterious lines and geoglyphs. These archaeological sites are witnesses of the rich cultural and historical heritage of Peru.
