Question (En)
What is the current political situation in El Salvador?
Answer (En)
The current political situation in El Salvador is complex. President Nayib Bukele, who took office in 2019, has been criticized for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and for his authoritarian approach to governing the country. In March 2022, Bukele implemented an emergency regime that suspended the rights and guarantees contemplated in the Constitution, which has been the subject of criticism from human rights organizations and some sectors of the population. In January 2024, the Congress of El Salvador, with a large pro-government majority, approved the twenty-second extension of the emergency regime, which suspends constitutional guarantees, for a period of 30 days and which will mark the holding of the presidential and legislative elections next year. February 4. Bukele is seeking a second five-year term and, according to surveys, he leads in voting intentions. Some academic and legal sectors consider that the Constitution prohibits immediate re-election. In addition, the reform approved in June 2023 reduced the number of deputies from 84 to 60, at the request of President Bukele.
