Question (En)
What is the importance of the paramos in Colombia and where can they be visited?
Answer (En)
The paramos are unique and strategic ecosystems in Colombia due to their role in water regulation, acting as natural sponges that capture, store and release water, vital for rivers and hydrographic basins. In addition, they are reservoirs of biodiversity, hosting endemic species and offering key ecosystem services such as climate regulation and protection against erosion. In Colombia, the paramos are distributed mainly in the Andes mountain range, with the Sumapaz paramo being the largest in the world. Other important moors are Chingaza, in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta; Pisba, in the Eastern mountain range; and the Guerrero moor, in the Central mountain range. These moors are ideal destinations for ecotourism, offering the opportunity to go hiking, bird watching and enjoy impressive natural landscapes while learning about the importance of their conservation.
