The city of Cuenca, located in southern Ecuador, has a rich history dating back to pre-Columbian times. Founded by the Incas in the 15th century, Cuenca became an important administrative and cultural center. In 1557, the Spanish founded the city of Cuenca on the Inca ruins, turning it into a colonial city with impressive architecture and an important religious and cultural center. During the colonial era, Cuenca became an important commercial and cultural center, known for its production of crafts and textiles. In 1820, Cuenca joined Ecuador's independence movement and in 1822 became part of the Republic of Gran Colombia. In 1830, Ecuador separated from Gran Colombia and Cuenca became part of the new Ecuadorian nation. Since then, Cuenca has been recognized for its well-preserved colonial architecture and rich cultural history.
