Question (En)
What is the role of religion in Canada?
Answer (En)
Canada is a secular country with a high degree of religious freedom, and religion plays a smaller role in public life compared to some other countries. The majority of Canadians identify as Christians (particularly Roman Catholics and Protestants), but the country is home to a wide range of religious beliefs, including Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, and Indigenous spiritual practices. The increasing number of immigrants has led to greater religious diversity. Religion’s influence on Canadian politics and law is limited, as the country adheres to principles of religious freedom and separation of church and state. However, religious communities continue to play an important role in many aspects of Canadian life, including education, charity, and community building. Major religious holidays, like Christmas and Easter, are widely observed, but public celebrations of various religious holidays have also become more common.
