Question (En)
What is the story behind the Tikal ruins in Guatemala?
Answer (En)
The Tikal ruins in Guatemala have a fascinating history dating back more than 2,000 years. Tikal was one of the most important cities of the Mayan civilization, which reached its peak between the 3rd and 10th centuries AD. During this period, Tikal was an important political, economic and cultural center, with a population estimated at tens of thousands of inhabitants. Tikal reached its greatest splendor during the reign of Jasaw Chan K'awiil I, who ruled between 682 and 734 AD. During his reign, many of the monuments and temples that can still be seen at the site today were built. The city was abandoned around 900 AD, for reasons that are still unclear. After its abandonment, Tikal was left in ruins and covered by jungle for centuries, until it was rediscovered in the 19th century. Tikal has since been excavated and restored, becoming one of the most important and visited archaeological sites in Central America.
