Question (En)
What animals are endemic to Guyana?
Answer (En)
Guyana is home to a great diversity of wildlife, including several endemic animals found only in this region. Endemic mammals include the Guyanese giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), Geoffroy's spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi), the three-toed sloth (Bradypus tridactylus), and the giant river otter (Pteronura brasiliensis), which is the largest mustelid in the world. In terms of birds, Guyana is home to endemic species such as the Guyana nightjar (Nyctiphrynus ocellatus), the blood tanager (Ramphocelus bresilius) and the stubble tanager (Pipraeidea bonariensis). These endemic birds are mainly found in the tropical forests and savannahs of the country. In the rivers and freshwater bodies of Guyana, endemic species such as the big-eyed catfish (Hypostomus plecostomus) and the Guyana zebrafish (Hyphessobrycon sweglesi) can be found. These are just a few examples of the rich diversity of endemic wildlife found in Guyana, making the conservation of its natural habitats of utmost importance.
