Question (En)
What is the situation of wetlands in Suriname and what is done to conserve them?
Answer (En)
livelihood of local communities. However, they face threats such as pollution, urbanization and conversion for agriculture. Suriname has taken steps to conserve its wetlands, including designating protected areas such as the Coppename Basin Nature Reserve, which is home to a high diversity of bird and mammal species. Suriname is also party to the Ramsar Convention, an international treaty that seeks the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands. As part of this agreement, Suriname has developed a national action plan for the conservation of its wetlands, which includes measures to protect key areas, restore degraded wetlands and promote the sustainable use of natural resources in these areas. In addition, Suriname is strengthening the capacity of its institutions and local communities to sustainably manage wetlands, through training and awareness programs. These actions are helping to ensure the long-term conservation of Suriname's wetlands and the valuable ecosystem services they provide.
