Question (En)
What measures are taken to control deforestation in Suriname and how is it monitored?
Answer (En)
Suriname has implemented several measures to control deforestation, one of the main threats to its tropical forests. One of the key measures is the creation of protected areas, which cover approximately 14% of the country's territory and are designed to conserve biodiversity and key ecosystem services. Additionally, regulations have been established to control illegal logging and promote sustainable practices in the forest industry, including forest certification. To monitor deforestation, Suriname uses technologies such as remote sensing and satellite images, which allow changes in forest cover to be identified in real time. These technologies are used by the Suriname Climate Change Monitoring Center (CMCCS) to generate regular reports on deforestation and provide information for forest conservation decision-making. Additionally, Suriname is strengthening the capacity of its institutions to combat deforestation, through training programs and collaboration with international organizations. These measures are helping to control deforestation in Suriname and protect its tropical forests, which are vital to biodiversity and the global climate.
