Suriname's mangroves play a fundamental role in local and global ecosystems due to their high biological productivity and their ability to provide a wide range of environmental benefits. Locally, mangroves are important because they act as natural nurseries for numerous species of fish, crustaceans and mollusks, which then disperse to other habitats, thus contributing to commercial and subsistence fisheries. Additionally, mangroves help protect coastlines from erosion caused by storms and waves, and help filter pollutants from the water before they reach coral reefs and other marine ecosystems.

Globally, mangroves are vital to the carbon cycle, storing large amounts of carbon in their soils and biomass. Deforestation and degradation of mangroves contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, making them one of the most important ecosystems for climate change mitigation. Therefore, the conservation and restoration of Suriname's mangroves would not only benefit local ecosystems, but would also help maintain global climate stability.
