Question (En)
What initiatives exist to promote sustainable tourism in Suriname and how are they being implemented?
Answer (En)
Suriname has implemented several initiatives to promote sustainable tourism, which seeks to minimize the negative impact on the environment and local communities, while promoting economic development and cultural conservation. One of the key initiatives is the creation of the Suriname Sustainable Tourism Foundation (STS), which works in collaboration with the government, the private sector and local communities to develop and promote sustainable practices in tourism. The STS has developed certification programs for hotels, tour operators and guides, which meet specific environmental, social and cultural criteria. These programs promote practices such as the efficient use of resources, the conservation of biodiversity and respect for local cultures. In addition, environmental and cultural education programs are being implemented to raise awareness among tourists and local communities about the importance of sustainability. Other initiatives include the development of ecotourism in protected areas, the promotion of authentic tourism products and collaboration with international organizations to strengthen Suriname's capacity in sustainable tourism. These initiatives are helping to diversify Suriname's economy and protect its natural and cultural resources for future generations.
