Question (En)
What areas of Suriname are considered world heritage sites for their ecological value?
Answer (En)
Suriname has a single area recognized as a World Heritage Site for its ecological value: the Central Suriname Reserve Forest. Designated in 2000, this national park covers approximately 10% of the country's territory and is one of the few places in the world where an intact tropical ecosystem is preserved. The forest is home to rich biodiversity, with a wide variety of flora and fauna species, many of which are endemic or endangered. The Central Suriname Reserve Forest is recognized for its importance as a genetic reserve and as one of the last refuges for many threatened species. Furthermore, the protected area contributes significantly to local and global climate regulation, as well as to the conservation of biodiversity worldwide. The World Heritage designation has helped raise awareness of the importance of this unique ecosystem and provided funding and support for its long-term conservation.
