Question (En)
??How is work being done in Uruguay to conserve the genetic diversity of its native species?
Answer (En)
Uruguay is working to conserve the genetic diversity of its native species through various strategies. One of them is the creation of germplasm banks, where seeds, spores, tissues or other biological materials that contain genetic material from native species are stored. These banks allow genetic diversity to be preserved and facilitate research and development of new varieties. In addition, in situ conservation of native species is promoted through the creation of protected areas and natural reserves. These areas make it possible to maintain natural ecosystems and protect wild populations of native species, thus guaranteeing the conservation of their genetic diversity. Another important strategy is the promotion of sustainable agricultural and livestock practices that favor the genetic diversity of native species. This includes the promotion of local breeds and varieties, as well as the use of breeding and selection techniques that preserve the genetic diversity of these species.
