Question (En)
What is the current situation of native forests in Uruguay and what is being done to protect them?
Answer (En)
The current situation of native forests in Uruguay is worrying due to the loss and degradation of these ecosystems, mainly due to agricultural and livestock expansion, urbanization and indiscriminate logging. According to data from the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries of Uruguay, it is estimated that only around 2% of the original native forest coverage remains in the country. To protect native forests, Uruguay has implemented various measures, such as the creation of protected areas, the promotion of reforestation with native species, the application of forest regulations and the carrying out of environmental education and awareness activities. In addition, economic incentive programs have been established for landowners who conserve their forests and monitoring and control actions have been carried out to prevent illegal deforestation. However, despite these efforts, the protection of native forests in Uruguay remains a major challenge.
