Colonia del Sacramento, founded in 1680 by Portugal, is a historic city that has played a crucial role in the history of Uruguay. Due to its strategic location at the mouth of the R&&i&&o de la Plata, the city was the subject of numerous conflicts between Spain and Portugal, which were fighting for control of the region. This constant conflict resulted in Colonia del Sacramento passing several times from Portuguese to Spanish hands and vice versa, until it was finally ceded to Spain permanently in 1777.
