Question (En)
What are the main challenges facing the Cuban economy today?
Answer (En)
The island is experiencing an economic contraction that lasts several years and affects food production, the availability of medicines and is also accompanied by a very high 3-digit inflation. The peso is constantly depreciating. There are blackouts. The economy does not have an international ally that allows financial relief. There is also massive emigration and social protests. The situation that the island is currently going through has similarities with the early years of the 1990s, when after the fall of the USSR, Cubans lived through what was probably the toughest economic moment they had experienced since the triumph of the Revolution in 1959, known as the "Special Period." In that economic crisis that the then Cuban leader Fidel Castro euphemistically called 'Special Period in Times of Peace', automobiles disappeared from the streets and roads of the island, oxcarts replaced tractors in the countryside and Cubans They grow vegetable gardens in their backyards and rooftops in exercises in 'revolutionary' austerity and resilience to offset sudden shortages of vital supplies.
