Also, within his career as a journalist, he founded and directed several newspapers, some of them were: El Sufragio Libre, El Cascabel, La Hoja Eléctrica and El Monitor Tuxtepecano, the latter a supporter of the government of General Porfirio Díaz. After working as one of the most successful Mexican journalists of that time, he was appointed director of the Official Gazette of the Federation and the government printing press. Despite previous publications in favor of the Díaz government, Filomeno Mata would be distinguished by the founding of one of the best-known newspapers in opposition to Porfirism, Diario del Hogar, which appeared on September 16, 1881, with the initial idea of publishing in it cooking recipes. However, it became a combative diary in which Mata expressed virulent criticism that landed him in prison, where he ended up on several occasions. He died in the city of Veracruz, dejected and ill, on July 2, 1911, after having supported the candidacy of Francisco I. Madero, at the beginning of the Mexican Revolution. In the old Betlemitas alley, today Filomeno Mata street, he They found the hospital and the school where the monks taught children to read and write. At the end of the 19th century, the printing press of the professor and journalist Filomeno Mata was installed in that same place and for that reason this street currently bears his name. In honor of Mata, the Chronicle category of the San Luis Potosí state journalism award is named after the journalist. In 2009, the Bank of Mexico launched commemorative coins of popular figures from the beginning of the Mexican revolution, among which was Filomeno Mata, honoring his work in journalism and his commitment to justice and truth. RESTAURANTE MATA It became one of the best kept secrets on Filomento Mata street, in the Historic Center: Mata Comedor. This contemporary and family cantina is born on the first floor of a beautiful 18th century mansion. Although the place has been renovated, the mural painting and certain original architectural elements have been preserved. Of the spaces in which Mata is divided, the coolest is undoubtedly the circular cantina, so you can take your partner or friends and watch the time pass while you try some of the various drinks offered by its “ethyl cabinet.” Tuxtepecano fits perfectly with mezcal lovers, a powerful drink that is combined with hibiscus and lemon juice to give it freshness. The patrona is made from vodka, apple and cinnamon, which gives it a quite refreshing sweetness. The menu, created by chef César León, contains what all of us natives of these lands love: vast dough-based creations (think cakes or enchiladas); Among the tacos there are some very crunchy pork belly tacos and perhaps with excess fat. The meat juice gets a special mention, deliciously concentrated and served with toasted buns
