Monteverde Cloud Forest: a tropical forest in the mist. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve is one of the most visited natural parks in Costa Rica. Its main attraction is the possibility of visiting a cloud forest, a type of tropical forest characterized by its high concentration of artificial fog because they are usually lands surrounded by mountains in which the humidity of the clouds is retained in one area. This causes a persistent dew in the forest, which is almost always shrouded in mist. The park has a limit on the number of travelers allowed per day to avoid overcrowding. Once you have paid the park entrance fee, you can choose one of the marked routes and walk among the mosses, vines, streams and creeks that make up the park's ecosystem. A very popular area in Monteverde is the Wilford Guindon suspension bridge, located at a certain altitude and surrounded by dense forests. The route is simple and can be done in a circular route that does not require much walking. Tenorio Volcano National Park: enjoy the Celeste River waterfall The Tenorio Volcano National Park is located in the Guanacaste mountain range, in the northwest of the country, and is one of the most photographed natural parks in Costa Rica. The reason? There you can take a trip to the Celeste River, named after the famous color that the water takes (light blue, of course) due to the dispersion of sunlight caused by the high concentration of aluminum silicates in its waters. The waterfall is at the beginning of the park and the trail continues to Teñideros, where the waters of the Buena Vista River and the Celeste River mix, which means that you can clearly see the two mixed currents, clearly differentiated by the light blue color of the waters of the river of the same name. The path is easy, although in the rainy season you may slip due to the accumulated mud. Parque del Volcán Arenal y la Fortuna: volcanes, cataratas y aguas termales The Arenal Volcano Natural Park is located in the La Fortuna area and offers several well-marked short hiking trails and the possibility of visiting the Danta waterfall ($10) or the Río Fortuna waterfall, which are very easy to access. There are also some more difficult excursions such as the climb to Cerro Chato, which involves a steep climb until you reach the extinct crater of the volcano where you can bathe in a unique environment. This area is also popular for the large number of thermal areas that you can find in resorts, hotels and naturally in rivers and waterfalls, although we were advised not to visit these last ones at dusk due to insecurity. Take advantage of the opportunity to bathe and relax on your trip to Costa Rica. Corcovado National Park: the largest natural park in Costa Rica Corcovado is the most spectacular park in Costa Rica. Located in the south of the country, it is the largest and most biodiverse. There you can visit the largest tropical rainforest on the planet, where thousands of species live, such as jaguars, pumas, tapirs, monkeys, coatis, crocodiles, snakes, iguanas, frogs and some 5,500 insects. Like many parks in Costa Rica, you have to pay an entrance fee to enter, and you also need to hire a guided tour to walk the trails. The danger in certain sections was the reason why the country's government took this measure a few years ago. The excursion to La Sirena station after a two-day walk across various beaches to this refuge is worth it as it will allow you to sleep in the heart of the jungle, a unique experience. Tortuguero National Park: an opportunity to see turtles spawning Tortuguero is almost an obligatory stop on a trip to Costa Rica. Located in the Atlantic Caribbean, its great strength is its location in an area of ??wetlands, canals, rivers, mangroves and swamps that must be reached by going up one of the main canals from the town of La Pavona, the area from where the tourist boats leave. Tortuguero (town) is nothing more than a place that lives for tourism with humble houses, some souvenir shops and tourist services and many hotels for all types of budgets. There you can see the green turtle spawning between July and October, one of the most impressive natural spectacles in the country. To see them you must book the excursion at the agencies in town, go out at night with your group and a guide to the park and wait for the guide to give you the signal to enter the beach when he detects (with luck) some turtles spawning. In no case do I recommend going to see them on your own or with agencies that do not meet these criteria that ensure good management of the spawning. Rincón de la Vieja National Park: one of the natural parks in Costa Rica with the best hiking trails The experience in the Rincón de La Vieja park is regulated because as a visitor you can only visit it through the marked trails (it is not the only one in the country). In this sense, the most recommended excursions in one of the most beautiful natural parks in Costa Rica are the Las Pailas trail, the Escondidas and La Cangreja waterfalls, the trail to the crater and Von Seebach hill (all of high difficulty). The route to climb the volcano is 16 kilometres long, but when we went it was closed for safety reasons and we limited ourselves to walking through Las Pailas to the falls. On the way you pass through various landscapes, some with curious areas where it is possible to see fumaroles, pools of mud and boiling water and the smell of sulphur, and also through more tropical forests around the La Cangreja Waterfall. When we visited it was one of the parks where we were able to see the most wild animals, including some enormous butterflies and several lizards. Protected Areas of Costa Rica Although Costa Rica is a small territory, it represents about 5% of the planet's biodiversity. Fortunately, this natural treasure is protected by the National System of Conservation Areas, preserving a total of 25% of the national territory. Our guests will be able to enjoy the country's majestic volcanoes, the beaches of the Pacific and the Caribbean, the dry, humid and rainy tropical forests, as well as the lush landscapes of the jungle, all without traveling long distances.
