Colombia's coffee belt is a popular destination for its colonial towns, coffee plantations, nature reserves and beautiful landscapes. It covers three Colombian departments – Caldas Quindio and Risaralda – which has earned it the name of the “Coffee Triangle.” This land between the mountains of the central Andes is so rich and fertile that avocados, bananas and pineapples are also grown there. Filandia is a Colombian municipality belonging to the department of Quindío.1 Originally, the territory in which the municipality is located was inhabited by indigenous Quimbayas. The lands of Filandia were called “Quimbaya province” by Spanish settlers around 1540. The town of Filandia was founded on August 20, 1878, by settlers from Antioquia. In 1892 it was granted the status of municipality. Travel time from Medellín: The trip from Medellín to Filandia takes approximately 6 hours by road. The most common route is via the Autopista Sur and the Armenia-Pereira highway, crossing the Eje Cafetero. Transportation options and prices: Intercity buses: You can take a bus from the Terminal del Sur in Medellín with companies such as Flota Occidental or Expreso Trejos. Prices vary between 60,000 and 80,000 COP depending on availability and schedule. Private transportation: Another option is to hire private transportation, which can be more comfortable but more expensive, around 200,000 COP each way. Schedules: Buses operate from early morning (5 a.m.) to 8 p.m., with departures approximately every hour from Medellín. Eco-friendly and budget hotels: 1. Casa Muy ChaCho: An eco-friendly hotel located in the center of Filandia, with prices starting at 80,000 COP per night. 2. Bidea Hostel: In the city center, ideal for travelers on a budget, with shared rooms starting at 50,000 COP. 3. Hostal La Aldea: Offers accommodation in eco-cabins with prices starting at 100,000 COP per night. THINGS TO DO IN FILANDIA, COLOMBIA: 1. EXPLORE THE STREET OF TIME THAT STOPPED One of the best things to do in Filandia is to walk through the streets of the town, especially along the Street of Time Stopped, which is located very close to the Immaculate Conception Parish. There, you can see beautiful houses, enjoy a delicious coffee of origin and taste the local cuisine. Walking through the colorful streets of the town is one of the best things to do in Filandia. You will discover the colonial architecture of Antioquia, marvel at its balconies full of flowers and charm, discover crafts made from iraca palm and visit the Bejuco al Canasto Interpretation Center. 2. VISIT THE ILLUMINATED HILL, THE VIEWPOINT OF FILANDIA One kilometer from the main park of Filandia is the Mirador Colina Iluminada, one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Coffee Region. From this place, you will have a panoramic view of the town, you can enjoy the sunset and, if the weather permits, see the Nevado del Tolima, one of the snow-capped mountains of Colombia. If you decide to walk from the town to the Mirador Colina Iluminada, keep in mind that you will pass through the neighborhood of the Master Craftsmen. There you will find a variety of crafts at very favorable prices, a perfect opportunity to take a little piece of Filandia's culture and traditions with you. VISIT SALENTO AND COCORA VALLEY The town of Salento is small and quiet, especially when compared to some of the larger cities in the region such as Armenia, Pereira and Manizales. However, it is the closest town to the Cocora Valley and is just south of the Los Nevados National Park. For this reason, it has become a hub for all travelers and adventurers who wish to visit the area. The Cocora Valley is characterized by its tropical cloud forests and diverse flora and fauna (including the wax palm), which can only survive in the specific climate of the high Andean valleys. This is one of the few places on Earth where you can see the wax palm, due to the unique and impressive topography of the area. This amazing palm tree can reach 60 meters in height and is the tallest in the world. The distance between Salento and Filandia is about 20 kilometers, that is, a short 30-minute drive by car. So, take advantage of your trip to visit this small town with colorful facades. You can enjoy hiking trails, bird watching, horseback riding and experience the warm hospitality of its inhabitants. If you decide to visit Salento before or after traveling to Filandia, we recommend spending at least two nights to explore the town's streets, take the coffee tour and have a full day to tour the Cocora Valley. VISIT COFFEE FARM AVERAGE COST 90,000 pesos. Learn about the crops, take the coffee cherries with your own hands, check their aroma before roasting. Understanding the selection of the fruit, learning from the farmers and their experience, is understanding that coffee in Colombia is much more than a bean. And the tasting?! Of course, in the end, at these coffee farms you can try different types of coffee, they explain their different textures, origins, aromas and finishes. You will be the protagonist of the Colombian coffee route.
